I posted some concerns I had with the television show, The Mentalist back in March 2014. I’ve been following this series as well as two others with interest. The other two shows are White Collar (USA Network) and Castle (ABC network). A similar crime, drama with romance is the successful series, Bones (Fox Network). The Mentalist has been a clever and interesting episodic TV series, which I felt had lost some of its edge after the season 6, Episode 8 confrontation between protagonist (Patrick Jane – The Mentalist) and antagonist (Red John).
What seemed to me as a strong original cast, devolved into a jumbled mess of new characters with insufficient strength of introduction and a separation from some of the prior ensemble, which under the best writing circumstances is difficult, but especially so when the long-term audience finds it difficult to warm up to the new characters while giving a sketchy introduction to anyone viewing this program for the first time. It was like a reboot without being a reboot, if that makes any sense. Some episodes gave me the impression that the character investment by the actors were not their best effort. I don’t believe I was alone in this assessment because audience stats showed a downward trend. CBS announced an almost cliff hanger decision to keep the program going for another season. The last episode of season 6 gave many long-term fans a little closure with the admission of love interest between Patrick Jane and Teresa Lisbon.
Season 7 was announced, but unlike Castle, it hasn’t been strongly promoted. I’ve just learned that this will be the final season and will only run 13 episodes beginning in January 2015. Tim Kang (Special Agent Kimball Cho) announced from Twitter, this will be the last season. Work resumed for the cast in July.
The Mentalist Season 7 announcements include, Simon Baker (Patrick Jane) will be directing two episodes. Patrick Jane, who started working for the FBI, in Austin Texas, in season 6, proclaimed his affection to Teresa Lisbon (played by Robin Tunney) before we finally see them share a kiss, in the last episode. This ongoing relationship may become somewhat complicated in the seventh season, as tensions arise between them and a female recruit at the FBI.
The Mentalist series begins with Patrick Jane, hired as an independent consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) based in Sacramento, California. Although not an officer of the law, he uses skills from his former career as a successful yet admittedly fraudulent psychic medium to help a team of CBI agents solve murders. The goal of Patrick Jane in his cooperation with the CBI is to track down the killer known as “Red John,” who was responsible for the brutal murders of his wife and daughter. During season 6, Patrick Jane catches up with Red John. Season 6 episode 9 jumps forward 2 years, after the demise of Red John, and begins with a new group of characters with only 4 cast members from prior season episodes.
