The more things change

20 Jun

ImageNo matter what your flavor of imaginary fantasy-whatzit are these days, one thing they will have in common in the future will be Asian connections. Current statistics from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) show almost 70 per cent of the studios’ annual revenue derive from international market box office.

Hollywood is driven by an invest and reward, emphasis on reward, business model. “The Hollywood studio staple has for a while been the big budget extravaganza that will sell overseas. Content has been shaped accordingly,”  says David Hancock, Head of Film and Cinema at IHS Screen Digest. That’s the reason we  see the current fantasy character driven plot repeated. It sells! This influence is determined by the total amount received at the Box Office.  For example the rankings below generally substantiate this opinion.

Note: Adjusting rankings for inflation significantly alters this list.Living in The Phantom Menace village

Future rankings will most likely be determined by  box office receipts from Asia and more specifically, China.

BBC Culture posted an article ‘How the global box office is changing Hollywood‘. Clearly they also see the elephant in the room. It appears China also likes mythology and supporting it with capital to prove it.
